Ukraine to bid for 2022

Ukraine is to bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics according to Ukranian president Victor Yanukovych. The bid will be lodged in 2014, but $500m will be allocated to the Games in the 2011 budget.

Following Yanukovych's comments, Ukraine's National Olympic Committee issued a press release saying it supports Ukraine bidding to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Representatives of the committee expressed confidence in Ukraine bidding and said it would significantly improve the country's sports facilities and facilitate economic development of the country. Yanukovych said that a possible venue for the Games is the winter resort of Bukovel. " At the same time the potential capital venue of the Games is a matter open for discussion" . He was confident that the Olympics will be a great impetus in the development of tourism in the Carpathians. Ukraine is to joint host EURO 2012 with Poland. Its preparation for the tournament has been a source of constant concern for European football's governing body UEFA due to construction and infrastructure issues.
