2018 IOC visit concluded

On 19 February 2011, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission concluded its inspection of 2018 Winter Olympics contender PyeongChang in South Korea and the programme of briefings with the Bid Committee.

The final day of the IOC Evaluation Commissions assessment of PyeongChang involved detailed briefings on the themes presented in the bids Candidate File, including safety and security, accommodation, technology and media operations. To reaffirm the governments firm support of the bid, South Koreas prime minister, Hwang–sik Kim, participated in the Bid Committees briefing presentation to the IOC. Prime minster Kim had arrived in PyeongChang to meet with international media at an evening reception, and then attended an IOC Official Gala Dinner. Also in attendance at the Gala Dinner were Korean IOC members Kun–hee Lee and Dae–sung Moon, as well as senior members of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee. The final session of the week–long IOC evaluation concluded with official press conferences by the IOC and then by the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee. The PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee stated that it was very pleased with the IOC Evaluation Commission visit, and that it has had the opportunity to bring its Winter Games Plan to life, and show how passionate the people of Korea are to host the Winter Games in 2018. PyeongChang 2018 was able to highlight the Korean publics committed enthusiasm for the bid by revealing that over 1, 400, 000 signatures of support have been collected by the Bid Committee. Hwang–sik Kim, prime minister of South Korea, said: " Already, we are seeing many people from all over Asia – some who are seeing snow for the first time – come to PyeongChang and become true winter sports enthusiasts. Thats why I am confident PyeongChang will be the catalyst in attracting legions of winter sports lovers from Asia and beyond. The Olympic ideal of inclusion will truly be realised in PyeongChang. Yang Ho Cho, chairman and CEO of PyeongChang 2018, said: It was an honour for PyeongChang to host the IOC Evaluation Commission this week and present our new bid for the 2018 Winter Games. We have shown the IOC that we have listened and learned from the Olympic Family, and made every effort to improve our bid. We have delivered on our commitments – investing in amazing new winter sports infrastructure like the Alpensia Resort, expanding the Dream Program for children around the world and helping to create a long term, sustainable winter sports hub in Asia that will inspire future generations of winter athletes. I believe that this week has shown that we can deliver on our promise of new horizons for Olympic winter sports and the spirit of Olympism. I am delighted with how the visit has gone and very proud of our bid team who have been magnificent throughout. For me, the highlight has been the passionate support for the bid shown by the Korean people who have come out in their tens of thousands to greet the Evaluation Commission. They have given us a great boost and I can assure all the people of Korea that we will do all that we can to bring the Winter Games to Asia in 2018.
