Rich golf pickings for SA

South Africa will host the single richest tournament in golf in 2012 after securing a five–year contract to stage a World Golf Championship (WGC) event.

Sunshine Tour commissioner Gareth Tindall announced the news just a day after Charl Schwartzel became the third South African to claim a US Masters victory at Augusta in mid–April 2011. Named the Tournament of Hope to build awareness for HIV/AIDS and poverty in the world, it will be only the second event outside of the US and will feature the top 70 golfers in the world rankings. Worth around R67. 2m ($10m), it will run from next year until 2016 and will be the most prestigious golf event held on the African continent. The other WGC events are the Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, the Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio, the Cadillac Championship in Florida and the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, China.
