SportAccord's new domain

Sport Business News

In the frame of its mission to support and protect the interests of the Sports Movement, SportAccord, the umbrella organisation for both Olympic and non–Olympic sports, intends to play an active role in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) process for creating new generic Top–Level Domain Names (gTLDs).

Consistent with this mission, SportAccord has issued an RFP to identify third parties that might be interested in a Sport Themed gTLD, to understand what their plans might be for such a gTLD, and to assess how SportAccord might participate in such an initiative. In June 2011 at its Singapore regional meeting, the ICANN Board passed a resolution moving forward with the planned roll–out of an unlimited number of new gTLDs (such as a . sport), and announced its intention to accept applications for new gTLDs from 12 January 2012 to 12 Aril 2012. Based on a mandate taken from its members (90 International Sports Federations) to protect the interests of the Sports Movement, as well as International and National Sports Federations, Sport's event stakeholders and organizers, athletes and sponsors, SportAccord intends to be actively involved in the ICANN proposed expansion of the new gTLD space. These interests were recently communicated to the United States Government in a written response submitted regarding the IANA Functions Further Notice of Inquiry (FNOI). The objective of SportAccord through this initiative is to ensure that any Sports Themed gTLDs are used productively and responsibly on behalf of the Sports Movement, and to ensure optimal development of Sport awareness. SportAccord is therefore looking to develop the best possible promotion of Sports Themed gTLDs by leveraging its unique relationship with its members, and to establish a usage policy that ensures respect of Sports key values. " We are very excited to launch this RFP initiative on behalf of the Sport Movement. Our aim is to leverage SportAccord's central position in the Sport & Olympic Movements, bring our resources together with a suitable partner to protect the sport themed domain names and develop a . Sport online community" said Vincent Gaillard, SportAccord General Director. About SportAccordSportAccord is the umbrella organisation for 105 international sports federations and organisations.
