Tokyo bid gets backing

Sport Business News

Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Olympic Games has secured key political backing in the shape of bipartisan support from Diet Members, led by Japan's former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.

Numerous politicians, Tokyo Metropolitan government members, athletes, and senior bid officials gathered for the event held by the Parliamentary Caucus for Tokyo 2020 Bid Promotion to demonstrate their unification and unequivocal support for Tokyo 2020s bid. The Diet is considered to be Japans highest organ of state power. It is important for us as members of Parliament to understand how we can best support the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee, said Hatoyama, chairman of the Parliamentary Caucus for Tokyo 2020 Bid Promotion. With the establishment of this organisation, and the London Games impending, this year is an extremely important year for us all. I kindly ask for everyones support in our efforts towards bringing the Games to Tokyo in 2020. Tokyo 2020 CEO Masato Mizuno added: I am extremely delighted and encouraged by the widespread support Tokyo 2020 received from the various Diet Members that lead our country. I look forward to working closely with everyone; ultimately allowing us to receive the greatest honour of playing host to the 2020 Games. Following Romes exit from the running, Baku, Doha, Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo remain in contention for the 2020 Games with the IOC due to vote on the host city in September 2013.
