Russia has offered to host the World Figure Skating Championships in place of Japan, after the event was called off due to the devastating earthquake and tsunami in the country.

According to press reports, Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko has sent a letter to Ottavio Cinquanta, the chief of world skating's ruling body the International Skating Union (ISU), with an official offer to stage the event in Moscow. " We sent a letter to the ISU with an offer to stage the world championships in Moscow, " Russia's deputy sports minster Yury Nagornykh told reporters. " It's a tough and very expensive task for us. But we decided to lend ISU a helping hand. We mourn along with the Japanese people over all those who were killed by that natural disaster. " Earlier ISU officials said they had called off the world championships, which were scheduled to take place in Tokyo from March 21–27.
