Arkhangelsk gets cultural

As part of the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad, the VI International Music and Theatre Festival, 'European Spring', has opened in the Russian city of Arkhangelsk.

The main aim of the Festival is to introduce residents of the region to the world of modern art. Performances will be held at the Theatre Squares of Arkhangelsk and Severodvinsk between the 1–15 April 2011. A number of performing arts groups are coming to Russia for the first time, including the Norwegian, Samovar Theatre and the French, Les Trompettes de Lyon. Festival participants also include the famous St Petersburg rock group, Billy's Band and Kolyada–Teatr from Ekaterinburg. The Arkhangelsk Youth Theatre will also be taking part in the European Spring Festival and actors from the theatre will meet the audience in the foyer after their performance. The European Spring Festival is part of the Year of the Theatre within the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad. The Year of the Theatre is a year of numerous productions, festivals and competitions, showing audiences both the traditions of Russian classical theatre and modern theatre. Art shows, music concerts and classical ballets will also be put on as part of the Year of the Theatre and guests and residents of Sochi will have the chance to meet actors, directors and theatre critics.
