Icon enhances Ryder Cup

Sport Business News

Drawing on experience gained across a range of events and venues, Icon, the live event and global branding specialist, helped to define and deliver the high impact branding for the exciting 2010 Ryder Cup competition. Working closely with the European Tour's appointed design agency Total Design, Icon provided extensive branding and signage solutions across the venue, the most memorable of which were the innovative large–format treatments applied to the Media Centre, Merchandise Facility and Grandstands.

Andrew Hodson, sales and marketing director at Icon, explained more: "The Ryder Cup is one of the world's premier sporting events. Contested by the sport's top players, and watched by a huge gallery and a vast international TV audience, creating the right atmosphere, ensuring sponsors receive the recognition they are due and creating a positive visitor experience were key factors in our work. " Making an event of this scale a success is no mean feat and the European Tour instilled a real team approach from all its suppliers from the earliest stages of planning. "Working in conjunction with the tent and scaffolding suppliers since the start of the year, rather than in isolation, allowed us to schedule work in a far more efficient and effective way, " explained Ian Furneaux, project manager for Icon. "The solution we had designed for the Merchandise Facility would not have been possible without the close and open relationship we had with the tentage company. I hope that we can develop this degree of high–level co–operation and working on other major events as it has proved beneficial to the client in a number of ways. There were far fewer last minute problems, we were able to propose and complete more ambitious elements in our design and the overall look of the event reflected the professionalism that abounded across every aspect of the competition. " Much of the signage has been carefully stored and will be utilised where ever possible when the Icon team provides similar services at the 2014 Ryder Cup which will be held at Gleneagles in Scotland. Icon was previously responsible for much of the signage and branding at The Open Championship held at St Andrews, Scotland earlier this summer. The company, which has worked on the event for over 30 years, was particularly pleased with the innovative and eye–catching Merchandise Pavilion, which could be seen from all angles across the village and was also visible from the all important 18th green. Icon's previous experience at The Open Championship proved invaluable in helping the company to utilise up to 80% of signage year on year, providing both significant financial and environmental benefits. One of the main changes in 2010 was the new colour for the Tee boards, which was well received and helped to streamline the appearance of tee furniture. In addition to the Merchandise Pavilion the Icon team also installed: 200 directional signs 850 meters of fascia approx 30 Tee boards20 hospitality chalet signs 6 arches in total of various sizes and materialsbridge branding Icon has extensive experience of the world of golf having also worked at The Ryder Cup at Valderrama in Spain in 1997 and The K Club Dublin, 2006, and at numerous European Tour events in the UK, Ireland, Spain, France and Italy.
