MEI talks to Vince Cooper, co–principal of Aspire4Sport, the latest conference to base itself in the Middle East (Qatar, 15–18 November 2010).

Please describe what your event's aims and ambitions are" Our tag line is 'Where the sporting world meets' and this is our objective with Aspire4Sport. The opportunity for clubs, organisations, individuals and companies from across the sporting landscape to get together in one place, discuss major issues affecting sport in general, make new acquaintances, create business alliances and network with each other in a unique and stunning setting. " How many years have you been holding your event? " This is our inaugural year and with John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Michael Johnson, Sir Alex Ferguson and other top names from all over the globe attending and taking part. We are starting as we mean to go on!" Why did you choose Qatar as the location for the event? " Qatar is clearly rapidly developing as a major sporting destination. The staging of the Doha Asian Games four years ago and of the Asian Cup in January 2010, along with the bid to stage the 2022 FIFA World Cup signify this. " How many people do you expect to attend the event and what can they expect from attending? " We are expecting a total attendance in excess of 2, 000 people from all areas of the sports industry. " What are the main issues that will be covered in your conference sessions? " Many of our forums cover current issues in sport including: The relationship between Sport and the Media, Technology in Sport, Corporate Social Responsibility, etc. " How can MEI readers find out more about your event? " By visiting www. aspire4sport. com. " What does Qatar have that is attractive to suppliers of major events in your opinion? " In my opinion, the country is energetically pursuing a prime position in the sporting world. New facilities, a booming professional football league and the enthusiastic pursuit of solutions to problems that are widespread in sport (cool–air technology, modular stadia construction, etc) clearly show that Qatar is serious about sport as an important part of its future.
