European Games are Go

Against a background of controversy in which the IAAF has ruled itself out of participation, the first European Olympic Games are set to take place in the spring or summer of 2015, featuring 15 different sports.

After several years of discussions, the European Olympic Committee (EOC) has now voted to hold the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, the same city that hosted the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. Although Russia and Turkey were thought to be first choice in terms of host nation, Azerbaijan was in fact the only country to make a bid.

Out of the 49 members of the EOC, which is headed by president Patrick Hickley, 38 voted in favour and only eight voted against. The competition will be held every four years, in a similar manner to the Pan-American Games.

The decision was taken by secret ballot at the 41st General Assembly of the EOC, which was held in Rome, Italy.
