On Wednesday 19th September MEI held one of the routine briefing and networking events on business continuity in the Middle East in respect of major events. Four very well-informed and experienced speakers gave an excellent overview of this subject and engaged in lively debate. There was a very strong view that this subject is growing and that the MEI network, together with the Institute, could provide significant support as a specialist area to the global major events community as well as the UAE and this plan will be developed over forthcoming months.

The format for the day was presentations, discussion and an open forum followed by networking drinks for those able to stay. The feedback was excellent and feeds into other MEI events being run before Christmas as well. If you wish to know more about these events and get involved in either speaking or attending please see below for contact details.

The Panel:

James Royds, Business Continuity Institute Chairman opened with a very clear introduction to the concept of Business Continuity Management and its relevance for this market in the Middle East and the status of this vital subject in the Region, as well as highlighting development in the Institute.

We were delighted that Anna Heystek, a Director of BOTH, a service outsourcing business based in the UAE flew over to support this event. Anna’s 8 years of experience in the UAE were evident from the practical, insightful scope of her presentation. As part of her visit, MEI and BOTH have agreed to form a partnership to support MEI clients in the Region and clearly this will include Qatar.

Steve Yates, Head of Corporate Business Continuity & Crisis Management, ODA and Steve Mellish, former Head of Business Continuity at Sainsburys brought some historical reality to the proceedings with two colourful and informative reflections on London 2012. Steve will be taking over as Chairman of the Business Continuity Institute from James Royds and MEI will discuss supporting their annual event in November.

We were also fortunate to be supported by Tim Allen who is the MEI representative for UAE and available to provide support for the MEI community in that region where he is very active. He also will support by keeping the MEI and BOTH project aligned and so whether you need market intelligence, help getting established or an early entry representative, we would be delighted to discuss meeting your needs.

Future Events:

We have a busy three months to round off the Jubilee and Olympic year. Our next Brazil Briefing takes place on Wednesday 3rd October. We have the Ambassador to Brazil speaking and are working on this briefing in association with Deloitte.

We have two further Brazil Briefings in November, in Glasgow on the 1st November and in Belfast on the 14th November.

Between these two briefings we open our Qatar campaign with a briefing on the 6th November which will take the form of an introduction as well as an investigation into the massive infrastructural development of the country which will take place in the lead up to 2022 and beyond.

In terms of attending international Expos and Conferences, MEI will be taking clients to both Expo Estadio in Sao Paulo and Soccerex in Rio, both taking place in November. MEI has a stand at both expos and shared stand space is available to companies wishing to reduce the cost of attendance and display at these highly prestigious expos. We have companies signed up to both but there is still space available. We are also planning a mission to Recife in North East Brazil after Soccerex working with the local MEI team. Places on this mission are also still available.

Finally, our last Security and Resilience Briefing will take place in Central London in early December. This will focus on the cyber threat to major events.
