MEI is pleased to announce that the former Ambassador to Qatar, John Hawkins, will be speaking at our upcoming seminar on Tuesday 6th November:

‘QATAR 2022 WORLD CUP PREPARATIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF OTHER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE UAE’

Mr John HAWKINS

John Hawkins is a career diplomat. His most recent posting was as Ambassador to the State of Qatar between 2008 and 2012. During his time in Doha the relationship between the UK and Qatar grew significantly with a steady increase in bilateral trade and investment as well as growing co-operation between the two countries on regional political and global energy issues. The strengthened relationship was underpinned by a series of major visits including that by the Prime Minister to Qatar in 2011 and the Emir’s State Visit to the UK the year before.

John Hawkins entered the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1982. He has served in South Africa (Pretoria and Cape Town), New Delhi and Madrid. Between 2004 and 2008 he was HM Consul General in Dubai. He has also worked in the Foreign Office’s Middle East Department, Economic Relations Department and Press Office. Between 1997 and 2000 he was seconded to the Invest in Britain Bureau in the (then) DTI as its International Director. Before joining the Foreign Office he spent a year working for J Sainsbury PLC.

John was educated at Bedford School and New College Oxford, where he completed a degree in Modern History
