On Thursday 6th December, Major Events International (MEI) hosted a Security and Resilience Briefing (SRB) which focused on the issue of Cyber Security and its growing importance for major events.

A number of highly informed and respected individuals from the sports world described their own experiences of dealing with cyber attacks during the London 2012 Olympic Games, followed by a lively debate around the issues they consider most significant in the build-up to Rio 2016.

The event, held at Lincoln’s Inn in central London, was opened by Russell Boardman who described his extensive experience of dealing with cyber security while working as an ICT and Security Consultant for the Government Olympic Executive during the planning and execution of London 2012. The other speakers all gave their unique perspective on the challenges of dealing with cyber security and what they believe to be the best approach to overcome the threats

Phil Packman, BT Group Engineering Services, and David Rogers, Deloitte, both then provided extremely insightful accounts of their company’s respective experiences as key sponsors and executers of the games. Jonathan Shaw, former Head of the Defence Cyber Security Programme for the MOD, provided a succinct and focused summary on the key Cyber Security threats that we are faced with today and what we must do to overcome them.

As is typical with MEI Events, the speeches were followed by lively debate amongst the wide variety of company representatives in the audience. The event has been described as a great success and particular praise awarded to the extensive knowledge of the speakers and the conversational and open nature of the briefing.;

During 2013, MEI will maintain a busy calendar by running a number of regular events. These events will continue to focus upon the business opportunities provided by the upcoming major events in Brazil, Russia and Qatar.
