The past few months have been busy on the events front for Major Events International. In the period between September and November we have held 4 seminars in London and Glasgow, each looking at different major event host nations; Brazil, Australia, Qatar and Russia, as well as one meeting of the Security & Resilience Group. We have been fortunate to hear from a plethora of accomplished speakers including Alan Charlton, former HM Ambassador to Brazil, Ken Smith, Agent General of the Queensland Government in the UK and Stephen Phipson, Director of Security Industry Engagement at the Home Office. Each event has also benefitted from hearing case studies from companies actively supplying major events globally, in order to share knowledge and best practice with businesses looking to expand into this global market.

In 2014 we will be running various events, please save the following dates in your diary:

-          26 February 2014: Security & Resilience briefing

-          30 April 2014: Security & Resilience Briefing at Counter Terror Expo in London

-          May 2014: Brazil seminar

We will also hold a Japan seminar, following the country’s successful bid for the 2020 Olympics for which the date will follow. Security and Resilience Group

Spawned from the conversations that we have had with our event delegates and also from the knowledge that we have of the UK security sector we have decided to develop our Security and Resilience Group (SRG) into a more structured format.  The expertise, reputation and experience of the UK security sector is globally recognised.  Stephen Phipson, mentioned above, is heading up a government backed Security Industry Engagement team at the Home Office with the specific purpose of maximising the opportunities available worldwide to the UK security sector that have been enhanced by the success of London 2012.  He has agreed to endorse the formation of our SRG for which we are now forming a steering committee.  We are also approaching the numerous security and export trade associations, requesting their support and involving them in the planning of a series of 4 SRG briefings which will culminate in a major seminar at the end of 2014.  The aim of all this is to further assist the UK security sector in its efforts to win bids for major contracts within the major events sector abroad.

Membership of the Major Event Network

Our Major Event Network membership numbers have now grown to over 400 and we hope to reach 500 by Christmas.  As you are aware the Basic Level of membership is FREE.  All attendees of all our events are registered as Basic Level members unless they specifically wish not to be and this gives them a position in our on-line Directory (accessible to all website visitors).  They will also receive regular updates on our events and activities as well as receiving a copy of the MEI Digest.

For those who wish to benefit more from the membership we have three payment levels, each giving additional promotional opportunity and increased visibility through our website and regular events.   We feel that one of the inherent but unpublished benefits of membership is the introductory service that we offer.  In addition to our events at which networking is a very valuable and rewarding activity, members of the MEN should take advantage of regular communication with our team and request introductions to personalities or organisations with whom we have often strong relationships.  As an example of some of the companies that have recently joined the MEN I could mention Populous, Getty Images, The Cavendish Group and UKTI DSO.  Four very different organisations, all of whom feel that they will get value from their membership.
