Internal discussions during the latter half of 2013 led to the decision to re-launch our Security and Resilience Group with the aim of delivering more export support to SMEs in the UK security sector.  We further agreed that in order to give the group some resonance and connectivity within the sector that we would form a steering committee made up of representatives from government, industry and the security trade bodies.  Stephen Phipson’s Industry Engagement Directorate within the Home Office and Simon Everest, Senior Security Advisor from UKTI DSO have both agreed to support this initiative and we also have the support of ADS Group, BSIA and Tech UK.  From the industry we have secured the support of Selex ES with conversations still in progress with three other recognised names.

We hosted our first Security and Resilience Briefing at the offices of ADS Group on Wednesday 26 February (see report on p.......).  This event focused on major event export opportunities and government agency support.  Stephen Phipson and Simon Everest both spoke and Sir Brian Burridge from Finmeccanica delivered an excellent closing address.  We aim to host a series of these relatively small briefings and the next two events will both take place in April.  The first will be at Twickenham in mid-April (date tbc) and the second on Thursday 30thApril at the Counter Terror Expo at Olympia.  An event is also being planned for June at the offices of Tech UK.  The aim of these briefings is to give the opportunity for SMEs to receive updated information from the government agencies, hear case studies from representatives of businesses active in the export market and to offer the chance to network with colleagues in the industry.

We also aim to secure stand space at selected expos and offer sharing opportunities to SMEs who might wish to attend but at a lower cost.  The first of these opportunities will be at the Counter Terror Expo on 29 and 30 April at Olympia where MEI have taken a stand and onto which we are encouraging companies.  The cost of this will be in the region of £2,000 and confirmed details will be distributed shortly.  We will also be looking at Rugby Expo, Transport Security Expo and Soccerex.

Security sub-sector leadership is also being looked at and to date Oliver Hoare of Dysart Solutions and Tim Otter from Lutra Associates have both agreed to work with MEI to develop a Cyber Security and CBRN sub-group, respectively.  Looking into the future we hope to arrange in-coming and out-going missions to countries of interest.  We are already talking to Oliver Hoare about a possible trip to Japan in early 2015.

SRG news will appear as a regular feature in the Digest and we look forward to seeing new and known faces at future events.
