Securing Glasgow 2014

The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games are now over, and the flag has been handed to Gold Coast, Australia, who will host the Games in 2018. As life in Glasgow is returning to normal after what has been dubbed “the best Games ever”, MEI talks to one of the sponsors tasked with successful delivery of a safe and secure games.

Glasgow 2014 was the latest global event to entrust the security of its stakeholders to Finmeccanica Company, Selex ES, and not without regret. The Company’s involvement builds on previous experience and expertise providing security solutions for major sporting events that include:

  • Turin 2006 Winter Olympics
  • 2009 G8 Summit
  • 2013 World Cycling Championship
  • Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics

As the Official Protective Perimeter Provider, Selex ES delivered a wide range of physical security measures to secure over 20 Games venues at Glasgow 2014, including the Athletes Village.

Delivering on lessons learned from previous Games, Police Scotland held overall responsibility for securing Glasgow 2014, employing an ‘integrated multi-agency approach’ to security. DCC Steve Allen, Police Scotland’s Security Director for the Commonwealth Games was quoted as saying: “Planning for the safety and security operation has taken place over the past seven years. It’s an operation unprecedented in scale and complexity in terms of the resources needed to ensure the Games run safely and securely. “It’s more challenging because Games venues are very much part of the infrastructure of the city.”

Francesco Norante, VP Major Events for Selex ES, echoed these statements and commented that “Whilst deploying security solutions for 19 venues concurrently over 3 months was demanding the proximity of the venues to local residents presented the greatest challenges; coupled with the desire make the games about the celebration of sports and culture, not about the appropriateness of security measures”.

Francesco highlighted the importance of a robust and reliable supply base, explaining that “Our Glasgow 2014 team, who were co-located in the city’s east end, comprised major events security experts and local SMEs. The security solution for each venue incorporated assets such as security fencing, CCTV Cameras, Sensors, Control Rooms, in certain cases Hostile Vehicle Mitigation systems, and was physically built and tested at our facility in Glasgow.

“Our team took great strides to deliver a cost effective, environmental considerate security solution for the benefit of local businesses and the overall economy of Scotland. Over 80% of the IT equipment we used comprised assets from previous major events, including London 2012. The remaining equipment and material required was sourced locally, boosting the local economy and reducing the environmental footprint.

“Initial feedback received from the Organising Committee, Police Scotland and the Home Office has been very positive, and all are satisfied with the final result.

From the outset, Selex ES was committed to ensuring a safe and secure Games experience for participants and athletes alike. Their goal was to provide Protective Perimeter Security solutions using the best of breed technology that provided a safe environment to allow Glasgow 2014 to deliver a truly memorable festival of sporting achievement – and what a success story it was. They are now supporting follow-up engagements with Organising Committees around the world to help in the safeguarding of future major sporting events.
