'Golden' Major Events opportunities in Australia

Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre

The year 2015 is off to a flying start for Major Events in Australia with the nation hosting both the Asian Football Cup and Cricket World Cup. It is no surprise then that the picture-postcard setting of the Gold Coast in Queensland has been selected as the host city for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. This presents a fantastic business opportunity for companies with major events credentials to grab a piece of the action!

Working closely with the Queensland Government, Major Events International is taking a delegation of international companies to the Gold Coast in April to meet with the 2018 Organising Committee (GOLDOC) and local companies to source collaboration and partnership opportunities. Mark Peters, CEO of GOLDOC is personally engaged in the mission and has committed his sector heads to hold detailed workshops with the delegation. The delegation will seek to work with local companies to source potential partnerships to bid for 2018 procurement opportunities. Queensland companies interested in bidding for games opportunities have pre-registered on the procurement portal and will be matched with delegates by business capabilities.

As part of this initiative, MEI hosted Nick McInnes, Head of UKTI Australiaon 5th March for a roundtable discussion on business opportunities with MEI members including Sportsworld, Capture the Event and Atkins. Ken Smith, the Agent General of the Queensland Government co-chaired the roundtable, covering opportunities specifically in relation to the upcoming games in Queensland in 2018.

Since the roundtable, we have learnt that Brisbane’s Lord Mayor Graham Quirk would also like for the Queensland capital to host the 2024 Olympic Games. If this is successful, this presents a wealth of long-term opportunity for companies who get in involved with the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the first instance, not to mention the possibility of using Australia as a springboard for further major event success in Asia with the upcoming 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2020 Summer Olympics taking place in Japan.
