The MEI Venue Technology and Operations steering group met for the first time on 3rd June to discuss the future plans for the group in the next 12 months. The group was formed following the success of the MEI sector seminar and visit to the Olympic park hosted by the London Legacy Development Corporation in March.

Hosted by fellow steering group member Ian Watts, Managing Director of IPT Design and chaired by MEI CEO Dennis Mills, other members of the group who were in attendance included: Francesco Norante, VP Major Events & Sports Stadia, Selex ES, Homy Masud, Security and Smart Systems – Sales & Marketing Manager, Selex ES, John Challinor, Publisher, Sports Management Magazine, Francis Casado, Business Development Director, Mobile Media Content, Mesh Ruparelia, Event Safety Consultant, Capita Events Safety, Chris Hall, Event Safety Consultant, Capita Events Safety.

The objective of the group is to bring together the key disciplines and expertise related to sports venues, technology developments and operations into one professional networked community as a virtual centre of excellence. The group delivers additional market profile and connectivity contributing to companies seeking winning more business in the iconic and niche major sporting events and venue markets.

A key outcome from discussions was around collaboration on an annual sector specific summit with an evening reception and awards to be held over 28th-29th October. The aim of the summit will be to buck the trend of the usual conference format by creating forums for open discussion and contribution.

The Venue Technology and Operations steering group will run alongside the Safety Security and Resilience steering group (SSRG) which has been running for two years. The members of the SSRG are due to meet next on 24th June where they will welcome three new elements into the fold including: the International Centre for Sport Security, Zaun Fencing and the Security Innovation and Technology Consortium.
