Major Events Opportunities in Australia

goldcoastThis has been an interesting period since the last Digest. In fact some say totally unique! The highlight has to be the visit to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 with 29 delegates coming on an MEI-run mission. The aim was to share knowledge and experience of involvement in recent major events with local companies and government agencies as well as Functional Area leads who will be responsible for 2018 Games delivery. All international companies operating in the major events market understand the need to be “local” and finding suitable partners was an important first step from this visit which was well received by all concerned and a pattern of more regular contact and workshops will follow in the run up to 2018.

Being in Qatar during the recent FIFA PR storm gave us an interesting perspective from in-country. Undeniably there will be considerable uncertainty ahead but there can be no doubt about Qatar’s ambitions and progress to prepare to host the 2022 Football World Cup. The visit included key meetings with officials and those who MEI will work with to help companies enter this market.

Brazil continues to occupy a lot of our time supporting companies in their aim to win Rio2016-related contracts. It would be fair to say that the view of most experienced suppliers is that for safe delivery of key resources, timescales are now very challenging. Along with our local Associates in Rio are actively helping companies share their experience to help inform the procurement process and to see what extra value we can add.

The Membership scheme continues to thrive and the Steering Group for Safety, Security and Resilience will meet on 24th June. We will be welcoming International Centre for Sports Security (Doha based) and Zaun Security Fencing as new members of this leadership group. The newly formed Venue Technology and Operations sector group has met for the first time and we are delighted that this already has considerable international representation including Mobile Media Content (Spain).

It is with some sadness we have witnessed the turbulence of Sportaccord and the implications for MEI members around the Convention. We trust that things will revert to a status of “must be there” for next year. Our partnership with Soccerex continues and we look forward to seeing you in Manchester in September with opportunities remaining to share our stand. Please let us know if you wish to join us there.
