Delegation at Stade de Velodromesmall

In mid-October MEI collaborated with UKTI France to lead a delegation of Members to Marseille, one of ten host cities for next year’s Euro 2016 championships taking place in France from June 10th – July 10th. The two day visit incorporated site visits and meetings with key stakeholders in relation to the 2016 competition.

Day one included a visit of the state of the art Stade de Velodrome, which reopened in 2014 after undergoing an estimated €267m refurbishment. Delegates were given a site tour and had the opportunity to present their companies to key decision makers. That afternoon, the delegation visited the Palais Omnisport and met with companies involved in Marseille’s ‘European Capital of Sport 2017’ status.

The second day of the visit focused on the 2024 Paris Olympic bid with a visit of the proposed Olympic sailing site in Marseille Stade Nautique du Roucas Blanc. At lunchtime delegates were exclusively hosted by the deputy Mayors for Sport, Economy and International Affairs for a reception at the Centre for Mediterranean Integration. All three Mayors spoke in depth with delegates and expressed confidence in the business opportunities for delegates in the region, welcoming the international expertise on offer. The visit rounded off with a tour of the Technosport site, hub of research and development activity for sports performance.

One delegate commented on the visit, “…our meetings have exceeded our expectations because we have in fact discovered strong interest and a real need for our services by Marseillan stakeholders. In a relatively short time we can now consider making a business proposal to Marseille. Without this trip and the preliminary MEI organization, it would have likely been more difficult to gain the necessary market knowledge and contacts to target clearly the potential stakeholders in Marseille."

After this successful visit, the clear message is that Marseille is open for business with long term sports business opportunities. MEI are in the process of putting together plans for a return visit to Marseille in early 2016, contact This email address is being protected from spambots.
