In July 2014, the Olympic Council of Asia appointed Jakarta as the hosts of the 18th Asian Games. With 45 nations competing, over 11,000 athletes taking part and 465 events in 36 sports, the Asian Games are increasingly becoming a huge opportunity for those involved in this unique and niche market.

MEI CEO, Dennis visited Jakarta between 14th - 17th August for the final countdown before the Games opened on the following Sunday. Dennis conducted site tours, met key staff and attended the rehearsal for the Opening Ceremony. Five Rivers delivered one of the most spectacular opening ceremonies in the memory and it was a great privilege to get to see a flawless rehearsal.

This is the best time to observe, learn lessons and speak to people as there is minimal distraction from the Games being in full deployment mode. Part of this visit was also to strengthen relationships with Members of the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA) and the 10 sector advisors they had employed to support the delivery of the Jakarta Games.

Also present were the host committee of the 19th Asian Games - set to be hosted in Hangzhou in 2022. Dennis has been in contact with the Deputy Director of the 19th Asian Games, Zuofeng Du for about a year now and have built a strong relationship over the past couple of months. Mr Du kindly presented Dennis with an official ‚ÄėHangzhou 2022 Organising Committee pin so many thanks to the team for gifting that to him. A dinner was held with some of the OCA advisory team and this included interviews with a Chinese TV station who are building some promotional material about the benefits of Hangzhou hosting their Games.

Getting the chance to see a Games just about ready to mobilise is always a fascinating experience. The knowledge gained allows MEI to build a deep understanding of what works and does not work.
