Transport work starts in Brazil

On 18 May 2010, the Brazilian Ministry for Cities released loans totalling R$1.5bn for public transport work in three of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup: Brasília, Recife and Salvador.

The funds are part of the Growth Acceleration Plan (PAC) of Urban Mobility, a programme which shall invest a total of R$11. 48bin in 47 different projects for speeding up the circulation of people and vehicles during the FIFA World Cup. Out of this total, R$7. 68bn shall come from resources from the Government Severance Indemnity Fund for Employees (Fundo de Garantia por Tempo de Serviço – FGTS), and the rest from City Halls and State Governments. Recife shall receive financing of R$589m for five projects. These include the implementation of the Via Mange corridor and also of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, both North–South and East–West. The City Hall and also the government of the State of Pernambuco shall chip in R$136m for these projects.
