Days before the host is announced for the 2012 Youth Winter Olympic Games, IOC has started the process to elect a host for the 2014 summer version of the event.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has opened the bidding process for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG). The IOC has written to all 205 national Olympic committees seeking host city nominations. The initial deadline for candidates is February 2009, with official bids to be entered by July 2009. The IOC executive board will select a shortlist in October 2009 and IOC members will vote on the host city in February 2010 during the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Even before the current global economic downturn, the IOC said the YOG should be staged in existing venues and not burden the host city with new construction costs. The YOG, as the flagship of the IOC's strategy towards young people, aims to:• prepare a generation of young elite athletes to have an ethical approach to sport, with strong values (excellence, friendship and respect) and principles (universality, sustainability, no discrimination);• educate young people on the importance of sport for their health and their social integration;• inform young people about the dangers linked to sport, such as doping and training to excess; and• propose to the youth of the world, both present in the host city and linked together through interactive digital communication tools, to share a once in a lifetime intense and emotional moment of solidarity and humanism, highlighting in particular the strong Olympic symbols (torch relays, flags, anthems). Singapore will host the inaugural Summer YOG in August 2010 with an operating budget of $75m underwritten by the city–state's government. Innsbruck and Kuopio are the final contenders for the right to host the first ever Winter YOG in 2012, with the winner being provisionally announced on 12 December. 2014 YOG selection schedule:NOCs to inform the IOC of the name of a YOG Candidate City – February 2009Signature of the YOG Candidature Procedure – February 2009IOC workshop for 2014 YOG Candidate Cities, Lausanne – 10 March 2009Submission of the YOG Candidature File, YOG Guarantees File, photographic files and Undertaking – July 2009Short–list of YOG Candidate Cities by the IOC Executive Board – October 2009Report of the IOC Evaluation Commission – Dec 2009–Jan 2010Recommendation by the IOC Executive Board of YOG Candidate Cities to be submitted to the IOC members for election as Host City – Dec 2009–Jan 2010Election and announcement of the Host City at IOC session in Vancouver – February 2010
