PyeongChang has announced it will bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and Qatar may bid for the FIFA World Cup that will be held in the same year.

The city of PyeongChang in South Korea is hoping it will be a case of third time lucky following its announcement that it will bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. PyeongChang has already chalked up two failed bids – for the 2010 and 2014 versions of the event. Meanwhile, still smarting from Doha's failure to make the 2016 Summer Olympic Games shortlist, Qatar is reported to be considering throwing its hat into the ring for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. As FIFA will announce the hosts of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups at the same time, Qatar would be in the running for both. " We are interested and we believe we can successfully host such a prestigious event as the World Cup finals, " Saud Al Mohannadi, secretary–general of the Qatar Football Association told Reuters. " We have the stadiums and we have experience hosting top sports events. We don't want to rush into anything, we need to find out what the full requirements are, but we are interested. " Qatar will host the 2011 Asian Cup and is already staging other important international sporting events. The Qatar Football Association will decide early in 2009 whether it will join other nations such as England, the Netherlands/Belgium, Australia, China, Mexico, Russia and Spain/Portugal in the race to win the event. The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be held in South Africa whilst Brazil will host the 2014 tournament.
