Expo goes 3G

China Mobile, China's largest telecom carrier, plans to build an additional 1, 000 3G mobile base stations in Shanghai by 2010 when the World Expo will be held in the city. The total number of 3G base stations will reach 5, 000 by 2010, covering a network equal to the current 2G network, said China Mobile, adding that the TD–SCDMA network's coverage in the park of Shanghai World Expo will reach more than 95%. Additionally, laptops with TD–SCDMA chipsets inside will be available in the city this year, offering users free internet access, according to the carrier. The Shanghai unit of China Mobile will also provide users with free time for 3G services, said the report. According to official statistics, China had 641 million mobile phone users by the end of last year. Shanghai Expo 2010 will take place between 1 May and 31 October 2010. The event expects to attract about 200 nations and international organisations to take part in the exhibition as well as 70m visitors from China and abroad.
