EURO 2016 contenders announced

Sport Business News

Four candidates representing five national associations have expressed their formal interest to host the final tournament of the UEFA European Football Championship in 2016.

France, Italy, and Turkey have informed UEFA they wish to submit a single bid, while a joint bid will be presented by Norway/Sweden. UEFA will now review the eligibility of the interested candidates, based on the various technical requirements relating to the potential infrastructure needed for EURO 2016, as well as any previous experience of the relevant member associations, cities and venues in organising multi–venue sports events, before confirming the official list of bidders. The second phase, starting around 3 April 2009 with the distribution of the bid requirements, will allow the candidates to develop their bid dossiers, which they will have to present to UEFA by 15 February 2010. Finally, there will be an evaluation phase, during which UEFA will conduct a series of official visits to the various bidders as from March 2010. The UEFA administration, and experts appointed by UEFA, will then examine the bid dossiers and prepare written evaluation reports for submission to the UEFA National Team Competitions Committee. A final decision is to be taken by the UEFA Executive Committee around 27 May 2010.
